The Mississippi Cattlemen’s Association (MCA) was founded in May 1946 during a cattle field day at Mississippi State College, when producers recognized the need for a unified voice for the state’s beef industry. Led by Extension leader Paul Newell and cattleman Charles Whittington, the organization began with 250 charter members committed to advancing and protecting Mississippi cattle producers.   

From its earliest days, MCA has played a key role in shaping the industry—helping establish the Dixie National Livestock Show, advocating for producer-friendly legislation, and supporting policies that strengthen rural communities. Over the decades, the Association has championed issues ranging from livestock theft prevention and animal health protections to tax relief and private property rights.   

MCA’s commitment to the future of agriculture is reflected in its support of education and youth leadership. The Association helped organize the Mississippi Junior Cattlemen’s Association in 1991 and later established the Mississippi Cattlemen’s Foundation to fund scholarships, research, and outreach programs.   

Today, MCA represents thousands of cattle producers across the state. While the industry continues to evolve, the mission remains the same as it was in 1946: to promote, protect, and advance Mississippi’s beef cattle industry for generations to come.
